max lives here and there, making a living of borrowed money. bruno is a teacher in bern and weekend father in zurich. one of them lies out of principle, the other to maintain order in his life. barbara is from attnang-puchheim, would like to make her doctor’s title in vienna, and shuttles back and forth between two men. beatrice lives in the austrian alps, loves a woman in zurich and maintains that she is pregnant. the one lies because she has to, the other because she can’t help it. before they meet one again, barbara, beatrice, bruno, and max have lied, withdrawn, cheated, denied themselves, been hypocritical and have made their way through life with white lies and deceitful love.
